What to know before you walk in
Nobody tells first-timers the mundane things, and the mundane things are what cause problems.
Gates
Over 200. Note the number of the one you come in by. It is the only reliable way to find your shoes, and your group, afterwards.
Floors
Ground mataf, first floor, second floor, and the roof. Each has its own tawaf circuit; upper floors are longer but far calmer.
Wheelchairs
Hire desks at the main gates. Electric carts run on dedicated upper-level lanes for both tawaf and Sa'i.
Zamzam
Coolers on every level, cups stacked beside them. Free, and the reason to carry a refillable bottle.
Women's areas
Designated sections on each level, signposted in Arabic and English. Prayer areas fill earliest at Maghrib.
Quietest hours
Roughly 9–11am and the hour after Isha. Avoid Maghrib entirely if you have a choice.

Five ways to cover the 90 kilometres
The train is fastest on paper and rarely fastest in practice, because neither station is where you actually want to be.

Where to stay
Hotels ranked by walking minutes, not metres
You will make this walk five times a day. Eighteen minutes each way is nearly three hours of walking daily, and in Makkah the return leg goes uphill.
- Clock Tower, 3 minutes. You are inside the complex. Roughly triple the price of anything else here.
- Ajyad, 6 minutes and flat the whole way. If the budget stretches, this is the one.
- Misfalah, 18 minutes and downhill going. Which means uphill coming back, five times a day, at 40°C. The hatching is the hill.
- Kudai, shuttle only. Cheap, and there is no shuttle at Fajr.
Operators quote metres. Nobody walks in metres, and in Makkah the number is nearly meaningless anyway because the city is built on hills. What matters is the time from your hotel door to a gate, and whether the return leg climbs.
Ajyad and the Clock Tower side is flat and short. It is also the most expensive land in the city and the rates reflect that exactly.
Misfalah looks like a bargain and often is. It is also 18 minutes and downhill on the way there, which means uphill on the way back, five times a day, in heat. We used to list it at 12 minutes. A reader who had actually stayed there put us right.
Kudai and Aziziyah are much cheaper and shuttle-dependent. Fine if your group has its own coach. Poor if you want to pray Tahajjud, because the shuttles do not run at 2am.

Visiting these is not part of Umrah and carries no ritual requirement. Go because the history is worth standing in.
Jabal al-Noor & Cave of Hira

Where the first revelation came. The climb is 640 metres of uneven steps.
Genuinely strenuous. Go before Fajr in summer or do not go at all.

The cave where the Prophet and Abu Bakr sheltered during the hijrah.
Harder than Jabal al-Noor. Most groups view it from the road.

The nearest miqat for entering ihram for a repeat Umrah.
A private driver for half a day usually costs less than per-head coach tickets for a family, and goes where you want rather than where the coach goes. In summer, anything involving a climb happens before Fajr or not at all.
